About Us - Advanced MFT Day Hospital
From Humble Beginnings to a Leader in Surgical Care
Our story began in the 1960s, when visionary surgeon Dr. Johan du Toit transformed an unused floor above his practice in downtown Port Elizabeth into a four-bed day hospital. What started as a creative solution for a single urgent case soon became a trusted choice for both general practitioners and the dental community.
In 1997, The Eye and Laser Institute’s ophthalmic doctors purchased MFT and relocated to 205 Cape Road, Mill Park, where it became a dedicated eye surgery facility. By 2009, under the leadership of Dr. Marais, we unveiled a state-of-the-art, expanded centre with 3 theatres, 15 beds, and 7 reclining chairs – opening the door to general surgery and establishing MFT as a multidisciplinary surgical hub.
A New Era with Advanced Health Private Day Hospitals
In 2025, MFT joined the Advanced Health Private Day Hospitals, a national network renowned for ISO-accredited quality, patient safety, and affordability. This partnership strengthens our ability to serve the Eastern Cape, offering:
- Expanded capacity – moving towards 25 beds, 12 ophthalmic chairs, and 5 theatres
- Greater collaboration among healthcare professionals
- Access to national resources, systems, and expertise
